IMMIGRANT STORIES

IMMIGRANT STORIES

Werner Julius Lowenstein was born in Berlin 18 July 1922. His story is of a young Jewish boy growing up in Berlin, Hitler Youth in the classroom, Nazi Band practising marching behind his house, an escape organised by Quakers using the “Kindertransport”, internment in England, transportation on the notorius “Dunera” to internment camps in Australia at Hay and Tatura.

In 1947, he married Wendy Robertson (AKA Wendy Lowenstein and Kathryn Wendy Lowenstein) and though the couple left the Communist Party after the Soviet invasion of Hungary in 1956, they remained committed to socialist ideals and the peace movement throughout their lives.

Werner’s story appears in Wendy and Morag’s book “The Immigrants” – pseudonym of “Robert” The Immigrants by Wendy Lowenstein and Morag Loh – Hardback Ed.
