Robe River - Pekoe Wallsend Dispute - 1986 - Working Lives
In July 1986 at Robe River Iron, new management, Peko-Wallsend Ltd and CEO Charles Copeman, had taken over in January. With them came a total review of operations and at the end of July a clean sweep of local site-level management. Critically, the company declared that it no longer recognised more than 200 “restrictive work practices” (conditions on the job). There would be a “whole new way of working”.
